When Should I Toss my Skincare Products?

If you are like me, I like to savor every drop of my skincare products - especially when they are luxurious like Airelle -- yet is that the safest thing we can do for our skin -- the largest organ of our body?

I don't eat fruit and vegetables that have been in the fridge too long, why should I wear expired skincare products on my face?

So here are some basic rules...since we are talking about Spring Cleaning this week, let's do a little cleaning out of our products.

For Airelle products specifically, use within 9 - 12 months since they contain the freshest, natural ingredients, have mild preservative system and are handmade especially for you.

General Rules:

  • Moisturizers and serums: 6 months to a year
  • Anti-aging treatments: 3 months to a year
  • Sunscreen or Sun Lotion: Look on the package for expiration date.
  • Body Lotion: 2 years
  • Peels & Masks: 3 months
  • Acne Treatments: 4 - 6 months
  • Retinoid Creams: 9 - 11 months
  • Scrubs: 2 years

Tips for making your skincare products last:

  • Store in a cool place to maintain freshness
  • Don't add water
  • Don't store your products in your car / trunk (aka. sunscreen)
  • Wash hands before using your products
  • Tighten the cap / lid to keep products fresh
  • Don't share products (especially rollers)
  • Write the date of purchase on your products
  • Toss eye products if you've had any eye infections

Important to note: If your Airelle products have some slight color change or separation over time, gently shake your product to re-mix the ingredients and continue to use for 9-12 months from your purchase. Even the natural aromas will change slightly.
