Flu season is in full swing. With over 41 states reporting intense flu outbreaks and several major cities declaring a public health emergency, it has almost become impossible to avoid it. If you are currently battling that pesky flu bug, know someone who is, or perhaps you are trying everything in your power to avoid it then you might want to try these healthy foods that will help prevent you from getting sick!

Eat more foods with vitamin D. About one-third of Americans are deficient in vitamin D which means your white blood cells aren’t strong enough to fight off infections effectively. Yogurt, egg yolks, and salmon have some of the highest concentrations of vitamin D. Drinking plenty of skim milk and orange juice will also do the trick.

Eat red bell peppers! Vitamin C is also great at helping kick a nasty flu or cold. While citrus fruits are one of the best sources of vitamin C, red bell peppers contain almost 3 times more that that of an orange.

Drink tea. A study from Harvard University reveals that immune cells of tea drinkers responded to germs five times faster than those of coffee drinkers. If you really want to fight of the flu fast, drink green tea. It contains an antioxidant compound called EGCG which works with your immune system to ease inflammation.

Eat plenty of blueberries:  Blueberries aren’t just great for the skin, they also have one of the highest levels of disease-fighting antioxidants of all fruit, according to research from the USDA. There is also a ton of  vitamin C in blueberries which has been proven to reduce stress and pumps up your immune system.

Eat pumpkin seeds:  Not only have pumpkin seeds been proven to reduce the duration of a cold, they also contain high levels of zinc which helps boots your immune system

Don’t skimp on carbs and fat. Most people tend to avoid carbs and fat in an attempt to lose weight. However, by doing that you are missing out on vital nutrients like iron and zinc which help maintain immunity and energy.
